Another SCA peerage medallion, this one for the elevation in Drachenwald.  The medallion design was inspired by a small number of disc-shaped pendants depicting animals. One example is a find with a two-headed bird from Gnezdovo shown below.

I’ve found additional examples on auction sites and other unverifiable online sources of animal shapes depicting birds and beasts in pendants with granulation and filigree.

Inspired by these examples, I designed the pelican medallion below, proportioned to best fill the space of the round shape of the medallion.  The medallion is made from argentium silver with fine silver granules.

The original drawing was refined and printed to paper, and the filigree shaped to match using different sized twisted wire (26 ga. and 30 ga.).

The pieces were then fixed to the surface with an eutectic solder mixture and allowed to dry before addition of the granules.  Granules are added and again allowed to dry to hold all the parts in place for soldering. The small granules are 0.4mm in diameter, and the larger granules were various sizes made to fit ranging from ~1-2mm in diameter. The base of the medallion is 22 gauge, and the overall diameter is ~38mm.

The piece was then soldered, and the bail added.

To finish the project up, the pendant was strung up as a necklace with beads donated by the friend who commissioned the medallion.
